Phonological Awareness

Phonological awareness skills eg. rhyming, syllable detection and phoneme identification are an important foundation for literacy skills such as reading and writing.  Treatment includes supporting the development of these skills, using specialised literacy programs.  At Headstart we use variety of phonological awareness programs, including

  • The Early Literacy Fundamentals (ELF) program.  The program is an early literacy Preventative program, in that, it aims to help children aged 3-6 years at risk of delays in their phonological awareness development.  It incorporates use of motor and sensory skills that are necessary for maintaining attention, sitting upright and handwriting.  An example of a specific motor planning task is compliance to a 2-3 part direction.  The program teaches additional skills such as rhyme detention and production.
  • The University of Queesland Phonological Awareness for Literacy (UQPAL).  It is a program that targets a range of literacy skills for children aged 7.5 years onwards.  Specifically it aims to develop phonological awareness and its application to reading and spelling.  The PAL programme incorporates sound-letter links for consonants including short vowels (eg, ‘a’, ‘I’) and long vowels (eg, ‘ie’, ‘oi’, ‘au’).  UQPAL is an explicit, structured, intensive program that targets phonological awareness and letter-sound correspondence learning for reading and spelling words.
